H. x sternii is a hybrid of H. lividus and argutifolius, named after Dr. Frederick Stern in 1939. It has the hardiness of H. argutifolius and the reddish backside of the leaves from H. lividus. H. x sternii is fertile and therefore it can be used for crossings. For example H. x ericsmithii is a hybrid of H. x sternii and H. niger.

H. x sternii should be planted in full sun or half shade in a well drained soil. It flowers pink and matures to a red with a greenish inside. H. x sternii flowers appear from January to mid April.
