Balearic hellebore

The distribution of Helleborus lividus is limited to the Balearic Islands, where it grows in rocky areas.

Because of its Mediterranean origin this species is not very hardy. The leaves fall at a temperature of -5°C. But the plant can develop again from the rhizome, which can survive up to -25°C.

Therefore this species should be planted in a pot, where it easily can be protected from frost.

The dark-green leaves of this caulescent species are subdivided into three parts and have silver veins. The apple-green or yellow-green flowers appear until February without frost. Sometimes the flowers are pink inside or even a little bite blue.

In breeding H. lividus has been used for crossings. Hybrids with H. lividus as one parent are:

- H. x sternii: Hybride between H. lividus and H. argutifolius
- H. x ericsmithii: Hybride between H. x sternii and H. niger
- H. x ballardiae: Hybride between H. lividus and H. niger
