H. x ericsmithii is a hybrid of H. x sternii
and H. niger. Therefore this hybrid combines the
positive attributes of three Helleborus-species. The slightly
toothed leaves, subdivided into three parts and with pale
veins, remind one of the parent plant H. argutifolius.
The red-brown leaf and flower stems are reminiscent of H. lividus.
The sometimes creamy-white flowers refer to the
third parent plant H. niger. The flowers appear from December
up to March and are light pink or white inside and often
with a green or pink breeze outside.
H. x ericsmithii is a perennial with fascinating leaves
and long-lasting flowers. It is suitable for use as a potted
plant. It should be planted in the garden in a semi-shaded
place that is well drained.
Propagation is by division, because this hybrid is sterile
and produces no seed.
