Greek hellebore

This acaulescent Helleborus-species originally comes from the woodlands in Albania, Serbia, Greece and southern Bulgaria.

The upper sides of the leaves are dark green and the underside shows a light green with hairy veins. The leaves are subdivided into 14 segments, which generally have a roundish shape.

The leathery leaves do not live through the winter. The leaves fall off in October.

The flowers of H. cyclophyllos appear from April up to May. Normally they are green, sometimes with a yellow or crème tint. In breeding this species is used to generate yellow flowering plants. Fragrance has been reported in this species.´

H. cyclophyllos is vulnerable to black spot disease and can be susceptible to frost damage in the spring. It prefers a sunny location in the garden with moist soil. It should be protected from the wind.
