Dark-Red Hellebore

H. atrorubens is native to Slovenia and Croatia. It does best in the shade of deciduous trees. In contrast to most hellebores, this species is difficult to propagate.

The leaves are subdivided with a minimum of seven and up to as many as eleven segments. The leaves die back in the winter. H. atrorubens flowers from March through May. Depending upon the selection the flowers can be black-violet or green-violet in color.

H. atrorubens belongs to the acaulescent species.
