Beer Trap

‘Uncle Sluggo’ is everywhere! There are many variations of snails. Slugs, which propagate in the warm, moist months grow very quickly and worry us as gardeners. At night or on rainy days they look for food, especially young plants and tender shoots.

Snails can be eradicated using a ‘Beer Trap’. There are commercial products on the market that can work as well. To build your own ‘Beer Trap’ use an empty cup or pan placed on or in the soil. If you can, construct a “roof” of some sort to keep rainwater out of the beer. Fill it up with beer in the evening. Snails of every size will follow the aroma of the hops and malt, will climb into the beer and drown in the beer. What a way to go!

The “Beer-Traps” should be cleaned regularly. Simply dump the stale beer and snail carcasses on the soil as compost.
